F.A.Q.

Is there fly fishing in the Santa Cruz area?

A: There are opportunities to cast a fly rod in the surf for perch and stripers. During December-March, depending on conditions, one can fly fish for steelhead in our local rivers.

How do I get started with fly fishing?

A: Alex Ferber offers private or group casting lessons. Many start off with the comprehensive class called Discover Fly Fishing, offered through the City of Capitola Recreation. This class gives a great introduction to casting as well as the other practical aspects of fly fishing including the mechanics of a fly rod and classroom sessions on flies and water conditions.
Once you have a basic understanding of fly fishing, you can hire Alex as a guide to take you out on a river to practice all the techniques you learned in your class.

Do I need my own equipment to get started?

A: Alex will provide all the essential gear (rod, reels, lines, flies) during classes and guided trips. You will need your own boots and waders should you take a guided trip.

What are the physical demands of fly fishing?

A: Fly fishing is a physical sport and, depending on where one fishes, can require good physical conditioning. Being able to walk trails and wade on uneven river beds is important. Good wrist strength is also important.
Fishing out of a boat is less demanding physically and would be better for those unable or not interested in walking.

Is fly fishing expensive?

A: Getting started may require investing in fly rods, reels, reel line, flies, boots and waders. This can cost between $500-$1000. Hiring a guide service for single or multiple day adventures can run between $400-$600 a day or more.

Is there an age limit?

A: No, but youngsters under 14 may not have the patience needed to practice and develop the necessary skills. There is no upper age limit, as long as one has the physical ability to participate in the sport.

Where does Alex go on guided trips?

A: Alex guides primarily in Northern California around Mt. Shasta and the Fall River/Burney region. The best time of year for a trip here is from March-November. The Trinity River guided trips for steelhead are best September-December- this is a walk-wading trip using 2 handed “spey rods”. Local surf fly fishing can be done all year long as water conditions allow.
