Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is there fly fishing in the Santa Cruz area?

A: You can cast a fly rod in the surf to target perch and stripers, creating exciting opportunities for anglers. Additionally, from December to March, depending on conditions, you can fly fish for steelhead in our local rivers, making winter an excellent time to test your skills on the water.

How do I get started with fly fishing?

A: Alex Ferber provides both private and group casting lessons, making it easy for anyone to improve their fly fishing skills. Many anglers begin with Discover Fly Fishing, a comprehensive class offered through the City of Capitola Recreation. This class not only introduces you to casting but also covers essential fly fishing techniques, including how a fly rod works and how to choose the right flies based on water conditions. After building a solid foundation, you can take the next step by hiring Alex as a guide. He will take you out on the river, where you can apply everything you’ve learned and refine your skills in a real fishing environment.

Do I need my own equipment to get started?

A: Alex provides all the essential gear—including rods, reels, lines, and flies—during both classes and guided trips, so you can focus on learning and fishing. However, if you book a guided trip, you’ll need to bring your own boots and waders to stay comfortable and prepared for the water.

What are the physical demands of fly fishing?

A: Fly fishing is an active sport that often requires good physical conditioning, especially when fishing in rugged environments. Navigating trails and wading through uneven riverbeds demand balance, endurance, and strong wrists for effective casting.

However, if you prefer a less physically demanding experience, fishing from a boat offers a great alternative. This option allows you to enjoy the sport without the need for extensive walking or wading, making it ideal for those with mobility concerns or anyone who simply wants a more relaxed outing.

Is fly fishing expensive?

A: When you start fly fishing, you’ll need to invest in essential gear like fly rods, reels, reel line, flies, boots, and waders. Depending on the quality and brand, your setup can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,000.

If you want to speed up your learning and gain hands-on experience, hiring a guide can make a huge difference. A professional guide will teach you advanced techniques, take you to prime fishing spots, and help you improve your skills on the water. Depending on the location and level of service, single or multi-day guided trips typically cost between $400 and $600 per day or more.

Is there an age limit?

A: Fly fishing has no strict age requirement, making it accessible to anglers of all ages. However, children under 14 often struggle with the patience needed to practice and master essential skills. That said, there’s no upper age limit. As long as you have the physical ability to cast, wade, and navigate the water, you can enjoy the sport at any stage of life.

Where does Alex go on guided trips?

A: Alex focuses his guiding trips in Northern California, primarily around Mt. Shasta and the Fall River/Burney region. From March through November, he takes anglers out during peak fishing season, ensuring the best conditions for success. If you’re looking to target steelhead, he offers walk-wading trips on the Trinity River between September and December. During these trips, you’ll use two-handed spey rods for a more specialized fishing experience. Additionally, for those who prefer a different challenge, he provides local surf fly fishing year-round, as long as water conditions remain safe and productive.
