Getting started in Fly Fishing can be a bit daunting… with all the knots, terminology, casting techniques, flies and gear, where does one start? Help!

I remember when I first became interested in Fly Fishing. I had recently purchased some property in North Eastern California, and was trying to figure out what activities to pursue. There were lots of rivers, creeks and lakes.  Fly Fishing was high on the list. But where to start?? My wife and I decided to take  a casting class at our local recreation center. The instructor loaned us a rod, and I promptly broke it while fishing. It happens… The instructor smiled and said that’s ok. I felt terrible. My wife then went to K-mart and bought 2 plastic fly rods and some department store flies. The only problem was I had no idea how to tie the flies on to the line. I asked a guy at the local park and he showed me how to do it. I then went to the local creek, and wouldn’t you know it, I caught a fish. I was HOOKED!!

I started taking classes, hired some guides and fished as much as I could. Eventually it started to make sense. I went on to Guide school and now I love to pass on what I have learned over the years. It’s truly the journey that makes Fly Fishing such an amazing adventure. One can now fly fish around the world. But some of the best fishing can be found in one’s own backyard.

So, my advice is take some classes, hire a guide to help shorten the learning curve, and fish as much as possible…The rewards are endless.

Consider purchasing an entry level rod and reel. Typically for trout, a 5 weight, 9 foot rod is a great first rod (already confusing terminology). A medium/fast action flex rod is ideal to learn basic casting. You will need a reel, also 5 weight, and a floating weight forward line. There are some great starter kits that one can buy that has all that you will need to start. (I can give you some suggestion for fly rods)

Start with a casting class or an intro to fly fishing class. I teach a beginning fly fishing class thru the Capitola Recreation Center) that covers basic casting, knots, rod rigging, some basic Entomology (the study of bugs, to help you figure out what flies to use). We will go over the lines/leaders, basic terminology and some basic fishing situations. I also teach beginning and intermediate casting classes. I also do guided trips in Northern California and teach surf fishing classes.

Give me a call if you have any questions, or would like to take some lessons, classes or do some fishing.
