Is there fly fishing in Santa Cruz?
This is a frequently asked question. Theoretically where there is water, one could cast a fly. The most consistent place to fly fish in Santa Cruz is right off the beach, into the surf. Ideally a flat, sandy beach works best. We use single hand 7-8 wt rods, as well as 2 handed rods with sinking lines and various fly patterns mimicking crabs, shrimp, grubs and bait fish. Useful colors include red, pinks, greens and especially orange. The use of a stripping basket rounds out your gear. We target Surf Perch as well as Striped Bass. The perch can be found all year long. Stripers typically run in the spring. We look at the tides, the wind and swell to determine the optimal time to fish. Early morning and late afternoon are great times to be out.
It’s a bit tricky to learn. It’s a challenging endeavor to master. Having a consistent overhead cast is very important. Double hauling is very useful. Coordinating your cast, with the waves, wading and navigating the surf takes some practice. We typically wade in the surf, so being comfortable in the ocean is a must. Learning to read the water rounds out the basic skill set. The reward includes catching some beautiful fish, seeing some amazing sunrises and sunsets, enjoying the crashing surf. Seeing seals, dolphins, whales, and many types of sea birds is an added bonus. The environment is dynamic. Experiencing the rhythm of the sea, and being one with the ocean is a unique flyfishing experience. It’s a lot of fun, and its local…come check it out!
For more information, give me a call, or book a ½ day (typically 4 hours) in the surf. I will include a 2 hour casting lesson, on the lawn, to familiarize you with the gear and casting techniques when booking a ½ day trip.
